I would give the experience overall 10 out of 10. It could not be bettered
Firstly I would like to say what a wonderful experience our Avalon river cruise was. We were delighted with our cabin, the marvellous food, the onboard facilities, the included trips and excursions and the economic pricing of the alcoholic drinks. The staff on board were extremely helpful and always ready to exchange a few pleasantries with ready smiles. We particularly appreciated the attention given to our needs from Lubos in the bar area as he always saw to it that we had our chosen regular tipple as soon as we put in an appearance. As two ladies travelling together we were very happy with this high level of service. In addition we also found both Ivo and Barbara similarly helpful but Lubos was just too quick for them! Our Cruise Director Andrzej Sanakiewicz was extremely well informed and readily available if needed. The included trips were very efficiently organised and of just the right duration. Also admission fees were included and we were not asked to pay more as often happens on Ocean Cruises. There were no photographers constantly taking pictures and attempting to sell them back to us! The bathroom contained high quality toiletries including hair and body shampoo, conditioner, liquid handwash and body lotion. Everywhere was sparkling and pristine clean. The shower cubicle contained an extremely efficient shower with oodles of hot water. All taps were lever type, a bonus as I have arthritis in my hands. The beds were fantastically comfortable with two large square pillows, one soft and one firm. I used both at once and slept like a log as the ship's engine was so quiet it could barely be heard. Our meals were delightful. The buffet breakfast catered for all nationalities from the full English breakfast to individually cooked omelettes etc. fruit, fish, cold platter, cereals, porridge, pancakes, toast with lots of different spread options to mention just some of the delights on offer. All different juices were available along with iced tea and a choice of different teas and coffee. The experience at lunchtime was similar but with different fare on offer. Freshly cooked meat options served by the chef with hot vegetables or an extensive salad bar with lots of salad dressings. A vegetarian option was also available as were a choice of soups and a cheese board. Desserts included at least two flavours of ice cream with fruit sauces and fresh fruit salad, cakes and a local dessert each day. Dinner was fantastic. The variety of choice suited every palate and the food was well cooked, excellently presented and tasted fantastic. Wine flowed freely and was served until desserts were on the table… and sometimes until the desserts were finished! After dinner a musician who was extremely versatile played music on not just the keyboard but the trombone, cornet and accordion. We could easily dance to his music and he was also on duty before dinner in the lounge. The crew show on the penultimate night was a great laugh and the violinist on the last evening was world class… what a superb entertainer. Well done Andrzej for organising this. Communication and information onboard was excellent. A Daily Newsletter set out the activities for the day and our Cruise Director occasionally reminded us over the loudspeaker system. Maps of each port of call were provided as was information about the operation of the locks. The views from our cabin and from the Sky Deck were constantly changing and we enjoyed cruising along looking at the sights and being given information about them by Andrzej. Our disembarkation was equally as efficient and trouble free as was our taxi transfer to the airport in Vienna which was organised by Andrzej. Our flights back went to plan and our free transfer, was the final luxurious touch! David was professional, smart and very communicative but knew instinctively when to let us snooze! Our grateful thanks to him for a smooth and quick transfer home. I would give the experience overall 10 out of 10. It could not be bettered and exceeded our expectations. Roll on our next river cruise!

A showcase of gilded architecture, see the lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace complex, with its Vienna Boys' Choir and Lipizzaner stallions, the impressive neo-Renaissance Vienna Opera House, and awe-inspiring St Stephen's Cathedral on your included city sightseeing tour with a local guide. In your free time, perhaps visit one of the many magnificent museums or browse through the Naschmarkt, Vienna's main outdoor produce market for over 80 years. An optional concert is available during your stay. (B)

Day 4 Melk - Dürnstein.

Included today: Guided visit of Melk's Benedictine Abbey; see the Stiftskirche in Dürnstein. Today is dedicated to the beautiful and romantic Wachau Valley, where so much of the excellent Austrian wine is grown and produced. Visit the impressive 11th-century BENEDICTINE ABBEY, which towers over the town of Melk. The abbey houses an ornate library with over 80,000 printed books and 2,000 manuscripts. Words cannot describe the splendor of the church with its frescoed ceilings, stunning high altar, marble statues, and 210-foot-high cupola. The view from the terrace of the abbey over the Danube and surrounding countryside is breathtaking! After Melk, lounge on the Sky Deck with a glass of white wine while enjoying the gorgeous scenery as you sail to Dürnstein, best recognized by its baroque blue and white Stiftskirche standing right on the river bank. The main street of this small town—with a population of less than 1,000 people—is lined with 16th-century residences and charming cobblestone streets. Explore on your own or choose one of the popular optional excursions – if you are fit and fancy some exercise, perhaps a biking excursion (weather permitting) fits the bill?. Situated above town are the ruins of the castle where England’s King Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192. If you are feeling adventurous, hike up to the ruins for spectacular views of the town and river. (B, L, D)

Day 5 Bratislava.

Join your Local Guide for a tour of the city, including a GUIDED WALK of its fascinating Old Town, where winding cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways twist and turn to reveal the Town Hall, one of the oldest stone buildings in the city. Also visit gothic ST. MARTIN’S CATHEDRAL, coronation church for the Kingdom of Hungary from the 16th to 19th centuries. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore on your own. (B, L, D)

After disembarking your cruise ship today's guided city tour takes in the massive hilltop castle complex, Fisherman's Bastion and Matthias Church. Or why not visit St Stephen's Basilica, Hungary's largest church? Stay two nights at the InterContiental Hotel Budapest (or similar) for two nights. (B)
