Slovakia River Cruises

Avalon’s River Danube cruises will take passengers through the country of Slovakia. Covering over 49,000 sq miles and with a population of 5.5 million, Slovakia is nestled right in the heart of Europe. It is bordered by the Czech Republic and Austria to the west; Poland to the north; Ukraine to the east; and Hungary to the south. Part of Czechoslovakia until the ‘Velvet Divorce’, Slovakia has been independent since 1993, and has proudly managed to preserve its own language and culture despite its history being intertwined with neighbouring countries. The Slovakian landscape is primarily mountainous, with high mountains in the north and low mountains in the centre. To the west it has a more hilly terrain with the Danube River basin in the south. Although not a large country, the temperatures in Slovakia can be quite varied with four different climates, partly due to its splendid mountain regions. The Danubian lowland, where the region and capital city of Bratislava can be found, is the warmest of all Slovakia’s regions. The climate has four distinct seasons, with warm, bright summers and cooler, cloudy winters.

Avalon passengers will have the opportunity to experience Slovakia’s capital Bratislava on a number of itineraries. Situated in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains on the banks of the Danube River, Bratislava is the largest city in Slovakia and is the political, economical and cultural centre of the country.  The charming Old Town is the historic centre of the city and home to the Town Hall, the Mesmerising Mirbach Palace and the gothic St Martin’s Cathedral. The Mirbach Palace is outstandingly elegant in its design with Rococo-style architecture. It is described by many as an ‘artistic jewel’, with colourful engravings preserved from the original interior design.

St Martin’s Cathedral is another landmark that must be paid a visit. Dating back to the 14th century, the Roman Catholic Cathedral has hosted the coronation ceremonies of Hungarian Kings and Queens, and to commemorate these events the top of the cathedral spire is a golden pillow with a crown, instead of the more commonly seen cross. The Cathedral towers above the city and is one of Bratislava’s most famous landmark attractions. Avalon passengers will also get to see the relatively new sophisticated Apollo Bridge that crosses the Danube River: it is Bratislava’s new pride and joy and the only European structure to be nominated for the Outstanding Civil Engineering Award. With Slovakia’s picturesque mountain landscapes, warm bright summers and a multitude of attractions; it really is worth going on one of Avalon’s River Danube cruises.
